PETALING JAYA, July 30: Former prime minister Najib Razak today hit out at Shafie Apdal following the latter’s announcement that the state assembly had been dissolved, saying the Sabah chief minister had made no such call to settle the uncertainty over his administration following the 2018 general election.
Accusing Shafie of stealing the people’s mandate through the defection of Barisan Nasional MPs to his camp, he said the Warisan president likewise did not call for a snap election last month citing the Covid-19 pandemic and need to resolve the economic crisis.
“Yet today he asked for the state assembly to be dissolved, claiming that the people’s mandate which they robbed had been robbed.
“You need not worry about Sabah’s affairs. It’s better for you to focus on becoming the prime minister for PH Plus,” he said in a Facebook post.
Najib’s comments came on the heels of Shafie’s announcement that Sabah governor Juhar Mahiruddin had consented to the dissolution of the state assembly.
This followed claims by former chief minister Musa Aman who said yesterday that he had the numbers needed to form a new state government.
Musa said he had received statutory declarations from a number of assemblymen from various parties confirming their support for a new alliance he was leading.
In June, Shafie also said he had no intention of holding a state election, insisting that his administration remained intact.
He was responding to DAP assemblyman Jimmy Wong who had called for snap polls to stop “backdoor governments” from coming to power in the state.
