NARATHIWAT, Aug 13 — Malaysia has begun to gradually return vehicles, belonging to Thais, which were left abandoned when they returned home during the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) following the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is learned that over 200 vehicles were left behind by Thai nationals working in Malaysia, especially those in Kelantan, as they were not allowed to bring back their vehicles to their hometowns in southern Thailand then.
Since April 18, Thailand has allowed its citizens to return home only via transportation provided by the Thai embassy.
As such the vehicles were left with friends or at parking lots in Malaysia.
Currently, a total of 111 vehicle owners have registered with the Thai embassy office in Kuala Lumpur and the Thai Consulates in Kelantan and Penang for the vehicles to be brought over in stages.
The first batch, comprising 29 vehicles, were sent back from Kelantan on Aug 10.
According to Sg Kolok district head, Rungruang Thimabut, as the owners were not allowed to enter Kelantan to collect the vehicles, towing company workers have been deployed to drive them up to the Thai-Malaysia border.
