KOTA KINABALU, Sept 18: Putrajaya and service providers are working together to provide special broadband packages for youths, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin revealed yesterday.
Muhyiddin said the government was aware that youths were very active online, with smartphones and computers becoming the mainstay in their lives, be it for communicating, learning or working.
And the government, he said, was relying on youths for innovations to help the nation develop its digital economy.
Therefore, Muhyiddin said this group of people must be given the opportunity and know-how to innovate and come up with new ideas.
“To do this, the government and service providers are working together to prepare a special broadband package for these youths.
“Details of the package will be announced by the companies soon,” he said when launching the Sabah Gateway here.
Also present were Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission chairman Fadhlullah Suhaimi.
Muhyiddin said the broadband package would be offered at a cheap rate.
He went on to say that under the National Digital Infrastructure Plan or Jendela, Sabah would see better coverage by the year-end and this would continue until 2022.
The use of fibre optics would be expanded to cover 251,166 premises throughout the state, he added.
The Jendela initiative for Sabah alone, he said, would cost around RM2.45 billion.
