PETALING JAYA, Oct 2: Former deputy health minister Dr Lee Boon Chye has called on Putrajaya to implement a targeted enhanced movement control order (TEMCO) in areas with high Covid-19 infections following the spike in cases in several states.
He urged the government to take immediate measures to prevent infections from spreading nationwide.
“TEMCO could be implemented in housing areas, buildings or districts with an increasing number of cases,” he told FMT.
Yesterday, the health ministry reported 260 new cases, with the highest number coming from Sabah and Kedah. There were also several fresh cases in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
Lee said one of the reasons for the spike was the government’s failure to implement mandatory 14 days’ quarantine at designated centres and hotels for those returning from Sabah to the peninsula.
“We seem to have missed the boat in trying to stop the spread of the virus from Sabah to West Malaysia. There was too much political consideration in the matter.
“Everyone should have been quarantined at government-run centres regardless of whether they were negative or not,” he said.
Lee also urged the health ministry to provide details on the exact locations where infections were reported to be spreading.
“They are just providing the names of the clusters but not the exact areas where the new cases are coming from,” he said.
