PETALING JAYA,Oct 20: The health ministry expects the number of Covid-19 infections to continue increasing but not exponentially, following the nation’s success in lowering the rate of infection (R0) to 1.5 compared with four weeks ago.

It said the R0 (pronounced R-naught) was at 2.2 one month ago when the third wave of the outbreak first started to hit.

It said the high number of infections in Kedah, Penang and Perak involved prisons that were already isolated from the community.

“In Sabah, cases have been rising following more aggressive targeted screenings in specific localities,” it said in a Facebook post on the distribution of cases across the country in the past 14 days.

There are 8,242 active cases currently with Sabah reporting 5,563 infections. Only the Nabawan and Tongod districts in the state have not reported any Covid-19 cases.

Kedah has 896 cases, followed by Selangor with 841, Penang with 507 and Perak with 128.

Kuala Lumpur has a total of 98 active cases, Labuan 78, Melaka 29, Negeri Sembilan 26, while Johor and Sarawak have 22 each.

Meanwhile, Terengganu has 12 cases, Pahang two and Kelantan one.

Perlis is the only state in the country with no active cases currently.

Malaysia has reported a total of 21,363 infections and 190 deaths so far.
