KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 14 — A moderate earthquake, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit north Sumatra, Indonesia, at 2.33 am today.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), in a statement, said the quake occurred about 69 kilometres east of Banda Aceh at a depth of 72 kilometres.
However, it posed no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
Meanwhile, MetMalaysia issued advice on Typhoon Vamco, with location at 1,118 kilometres northwest of Kudat, in Sabah, or about 398 kilometres southeast of Da Nang, in Vietnam.
“Based on the observation at 5 am today, the typhoon is moving west at a speed of 20 kilometres per hour (kph), and can reach a maximum speed of up to 126 kph.
“It could cause strong winds and rough seas in South China Sea,” it said.
