PETALING JAYA，Jan 14: Anwar Ibrahim has directed opposition MPs to write to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to plead with him to revoke the emergency proclamation and call for a Parliament sitting as soon as possible.
The opposition leader said that in the letter sent to the MPs, he had suggested for them to do so before Friday.
“The letter should reflect the stance of the MPs and that of their parties.”
The PKR president went on to express hope that the King would consider their request to revoke the emergency proclamation and order for a Parliament sitting before Jan 31 to debate the emergency, Covid-19 and the economic crisis.
In the letter to the MPs, Anwar said that an emergency proclamation was not needed as there were sufficient measures in place to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, including the movement restrictions.
The emergency, he said, would only exacerbate the economic crisis.
“We are of the opinion that the prime minister and the government were hasty in advising the King as it had nothing to do with Covid-19, the floods or the economy.
“The prime minister is more focused on remaining in power.”
On Tuesday, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, assented to the declaration of a state of emergency.
The palace said the King consented to the emergency to last until Aug 1, or an earlier date if Covid-19 cases are reduced by then, following a meeting with Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
Muhyiddin later said there would be no parliamentary or state assembly meetings until a later date set by the King.
