PETALING JAYA，Mar 15: Two opposition parties have announced that they will be offering legal assistance to those issued RM10,000 fines for violating the movement control order’s standard operating procedures.
DAP legal bureau chairman Ramkarpal Singh said the party’s service centres have received complaints from the public on offences under Section 25 of the Prevention of Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 where an individual can be fined up to RM10,000.
“Recently, DAP MPs and assemblymen have been receiving many complaints on the compounds issue,” the Bukit Gelugor MP said in a statement.
He said the assistance will be provided in every state, and advised those who had been issued the summonses to reach out to the party for further action.
“Those who are in the bottom 40% household (B40) category will be prioritised,” he said.
Meanwhile, Johor PKR deputy chief Jimmy Puah Wee Tse said the state PKR’s legal team will offer pro bono services to those issued summonses in the state.
The Bukit Batu assemblyman also proposed for Putrajaya to increase the amount of the fine in stages.
“For example, RM1,000 for the first offence, RM3,000 for the second offence, RM5,000 for the third offence and RM10,000 for subsequent offences,” he said.
Last Saturday, Johor police issued summonses with the RM10,000 fine to 109 customers arrested at an entertainment centre in Muar.
The 81 men and 28 women, aged between 17 and 52, were arrested at about 10.45pm and fined for not obeying physical distancing rules.
A 52-year-old man who claimed to be the manager was also arrested and later fined RM50,000, Johor police chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said.
