PETALING JAYA April 27 : A Kelantanese burger seller who was slapped with a RM50,000 compound for operating beyond the permitted hours during the movement control order (MCO) has appealed to the authorities to have the fine written off.
Wan Mohd Faisal Wan Kadir’s plight has drawn a lot of attention, including from former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, since his case went viral.
Yesterday, Faisal said he was approached by five police officers at about 11pm as he was preparing burgers at his house in Kampung Rambutan Rendang, Kota Bharu.
Today, Faisal, 38, went to the Kota Bharu district health office to file an appeal against his compound.
“I have appealed against the compound, I also explained that I had to operate beyond hours because of Ramadan as the time provided was insufficient.
“Also, during the incident (when he was issued the compound), there were no customers around, I was preparing orders for takeaways.”
He said the health ministry will submit his appeal to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for consideration.
“I hope my appeal will be accepted.”
Faisal said many people, including those from the government and opposition parties, individuals, NGOs, as well as the state government have offered legal assistance.
He said he was grateful for all the offers but hoped his case would not be turned into a political issue. Instead, he hoped it would prevent other traders from becoming victims of unreasonable compounds.
De facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan has said compound notices issued for offences under the MCO must be based on government guidelines.
