TAIPEI, Dec 16 — Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Thursday reported another imported case of the COVID-19 Omicron variant, bringing the total number of such cases to four since Dec 11.
The latest Omicron-infection involved a Taiwanese man in his 50s who returned from the United States on Dec 12, CECC official Lo Yi Chun said at a daily press event as reported by Central news agency (CNA).
The man tested positive for COVID-19 at the airport with a cycle threshold (CT) value of 27, Lo said, indicating that the patient developed a sore throat the following day and is being quarantined in a hospital negative pressure isolation room.
Genome sequencing shows that he has been infected by the Omicron variant of the disease, Lo added.
According to the CECC official, the patient had been fully vaccinated with two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and the case has been classified as a breakthrough infection.
A total of eight passengers on the same flight have been placed in home quarantine and so far all have tested negative for COVID-19, Lo said.
Taiwan has seen four Omicron variant infections, all imported, with the first three confirmed on Dec 11.
