TAWAU, Jan 26 — A safety assessment of the Pasar Tanjung building structure here is being conducted following complaints of cracks appearing on several walls and columns of the over 30-year-old building.
Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) president Joseph Pang said the assessment, being carried out by the technical team involving the MPT engineering division, the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department and the Public Works Department, was to ensure the building was safe for use.
“We received a complaint two days ago that there was a column (pillar) that had serious cracks, and we carried out monitoring. Today, we also found that there were other cracks on two columns and some walls of the building but (the cracks) were not large,” he told reporters after inspecting the condition of the Pasar Tanjung building today.
The three-storey building houses more than 1,000 vegetable, meat, poultry and dried fish traders and nine government offices.
Joseph said the results of the report would determine the next course of action, including relocating traders to other business sites and carrying out repair work.
