PUTRAJAYA, March 28 — The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has certified 19 data scientists with the required essential skills such as on statistics, data curation, advanced analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning, said Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin.
“This has helped DOSM to provide input for more comprehensive and accurate data-driven policy formulation and developing deeper data analytics expertise in-house,” he said in a statement today.
He said 10 data scientists graduated under the DOSM-SAS Institute collaboration programme today, while nine data scientists had undergone a similar programme in 2018.
The SAS-Certified Data Scientists programme is a continuous initiative of data scientist capacity building to the full force of data science application in producing official statistics.
Projects related to big data analytics currently undertaken by DOSM include Statistics Big Data Analytics (StatsBDA), Statistics Data Warehouse (StatsDW), Malaysia Integrated Population Census System (MyIPCS), Social Protection Database (PDPS), and Labour Market Information and Analytics Platform (LMIAP), he said.
Mohd Uzir said DOSM is speeding up the initiative of establishing the National Big Data Analytics Centre (NBDAC) in collaboration with the Communications and Multimedia Ministry and the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU).
He said NBDAC will serve as a national data centre that bridges data gaps within and across public and private sectors utilising advanced analytics and technologies.
