On May 1, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported at least 228 probable cases of hepatitis of unknown origin in children from 20 countries, with dozens more under investigation. WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told reporters in Geneva that most cases were found in Europe, with others in the Americas, the West Pacific and Southeast Asia. The age of the children ranged from 1 month to 16. Seventeen children have required a liver transplant, and one died on April 23. Many patients reported gastrointestinal symptoms, including abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting but most did not present with fever.
