KANGAR, June 19 — Perlis is the bastion for the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah from superstitious practices, superstitions and exaggerations of religious teachings without a true basis,” said the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail.
“I, therefore, urge all those who are here and Muslims to come together and help in defending the sunnah (traditions and practices) of the Prophet, Peace Be Upon Him,” he said in his speech at the Closing Ceremony of the 7th Sunnah Retreat at Masjid Alwi tonight.
Also present were Raja Perempuan Perlis, Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid, Raja Muda Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and Raja Puan Muda Perlis, Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.
Also in attendance were Perlis Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Azlan Man, state exco members and Perlis mufti Datuk Dr. Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.
In his speech, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin also said he was informed that superstitious teachings in society are becoming more and more prevalent.
“There are those who believe in the miracle water, some believe the Prophet had come to their place, some believe that spirit can move from one body to a new body, some sought the help of jinn and various other nonsensical claims,” he said.
He said there are also a few who like to label those who adhere to the Qur’an and Sunnah as ‘Wahhabi’ and others.
“I would like to emphasise that the state of Perlis does not follow the teachings of ‘Wahhabi.”
“Our contention is that in Perlis everything should be based on the Quran and Sunnah, by studying the explanations and ijtihad (reasoning) of the learned scholars which consists of all streams of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah, and not limited to a single figure only,” he added.
He said the sunnah is the legacy of the Prophet SAW and it should be taken seriously by every Muslim.
