PETALING JAYA, June 30 — The president of a Sabah-based political party and another individual were charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today on charges of cheating a foreigner over the purported issuance of a Malaysian identity card two months ago.

Mohd Arshad Abdul, 46, and Mohamad Amkah Ahmad, 48, each pleaded not guilty to the charge of cheating Al Saddam Husin by promising him a blue identity card (citizen) once he registers for the ‘Stateless Information Documentation Data Collection Programme’, which turned out to be non-existent.

This induced the victim to hand over RM35 to the accused, the charges read.

The offence was allegedly committed at No 7-2, First Floor, Jalan SP 2/4 Taman Serdang Perdana, Seri Kembangan at 2 pm on April 15.

The duo, both unrepresented, was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment of 10 years, whipping and fine, upon conviction.

Magistrate Nurshahira Abdul Salim allowed bail of RM1,500 for each of the accused and fixed Oct 12 for case mention.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin told a media conference in Bukit Aman today that the two individuals were arrested on June 22 in Subang Jaya on suspicion of being involved in a data card fraud syndicate for stateless individuals.
