KUCHING, July 25 — The  Borneo Cultures Museum (BCM) will start charging daily entry fees from Aug 1 with tickets starting from RM5 to RM20 for citizen visitors, said Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said a fee will be imposed for use of facilities such as the auditorium and multipurpose hall, as the proposed fee is to cover part of the museum’s maintenance costs.

“For people with disabilities (PwD) who are registered with the Department of Social Welfare (JKM), admission is free as well as for disabled visitors (documented) from abroad. It is also free for Malaysian children aged 12 and below (RM20 ticket for non-citizen international children below 12).

“Tickets are RM20 for Malaysian citizens who are not from Sarawak and RM10 for Sarawakian adults aged 18 to 60, while international visitors (non-citizens) will be charged RM50. Tickets for (citizen) visitors aged 13 to 17 and students from any educational institution are RM5 and RM25 for non-citizen (international students),” he said.

He said this in a press conference at BCM here today.

Abdul Karim said for the group category of 10 people or more or registered corporate rate, fees start at RM8 per (Sarawakian) person (higher fee for other Malaysians and internationals) while an annual pass for unlimited visits will cost RM100 for all visitors.

He said the ticket price for seniors aged 61 and above is RM5 for Sarawakians, RM20 (non-Sarawakians) and RM25 (international senior visitors).

According to him, the fee for using a BCM facility starts from RM100 for government agencies and non-government bodies, while it is RM200 for corporates.

In the meantime, he said the museum which opened last March 9 (with free admission for five months) has attracted 350,000 local and foreign visitors so far this month, with an estimated 1,500 visitors a day.

Abdul Karim also informed that a new museum in Limbang located in the north of Sarawak will be opened on Aug 4.
