NEW DELHI, Aug 4 — Sri Lanka’s president on Thursday reiterated his country’s “One-China” policy amid an ongoing row between the United States and China over US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe during a meeting with Qi Zhenghong, China’s ambassador to Sri Lanka, reiterated the country’s “firm commitment to the one-China policy, as well as to the United Nations Charter principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations”.
“Countries must refrain from provocations which further escalate the current global tensions. Mutual respect and non-interference in the internal affairs of countries are important foundations for peaceful cooperation and non-confrontation,” Wickremesinghe said.
Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi earlier dismissed Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, the self-governed island China sees as part of its territory, as a “complete farce”.
