KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — The Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS) has called on all Malaysians to take advantage of the expertise of pharmacists in the field of medicines in this country in their health care.

Its president Amhari Buang said in line with the association’s motto ‘Serving the People’s Health’ he also reminded the community to improve self-care in the journey to the endemic phase.

“Pharmacists are always ready to improve the literacy of members of the community in terms of health and medicines. This can produce a healthy and productive society for the benefit of the country,” he said in a statement issued in conjunction with World Pharmacists Day 2022 (WPD 2022) today.

Regarding the celebration of WPD this year with the theme “Pharmacy United in Action for A Healthier World”, Amhari said it was to recognise the contribution of pharmacists in both the public and private sectors to universal health, including during the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For example, he said, in Malaysia, pharmacists have played a very important role in the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) whether in the regulatory aspect, logistics and administering vaccines in large-scale vaccination centres.

“Malaysia’s success in PICK has helped in its journey to the endemic phase of the infection. This is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO),” he said.

He added that the contribution of pharmacists in the field of health such as promotion, prevention, curative, rehabilitation and palliative is very significant, all to ensure health at all levels up to the level of global health.

“Apart from that, pharmacists have also provided innovative value-added services such as e-pharmacy, home delivery of medicine and tele-pharmacy. All these efforts are to improve the health of the people in Malaysia,” he said.

World Pharmacists Day is observed worldwide on Sept 25 every year and MPS started the national-level celebration in 2014.
