KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 — The Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah attended a dinner in conjunction with the 8th ASEAN Traditional Textile Symposium at Istana Negara tonight.
The arrival of Her Majesty who is the founder and patron of the Royal Pahang Weaving Foundation at 8.45 pm, was accompanied by the Sultanah of Terengganu, Sultanah Nur Zahirah; the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin Abdul Rahman; the Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim and the Sultanah of Kelantan, Sultanah Nur Diana Petra Abdullah.
A total of 400 guests present comprised local fashion designers as well as a delegation of textile practitioners from 13 countries involved in the symposium held from Sept 25 until Friday.
The event tonight featured a cultural presentation as well as a traditional fashion show including songket and Pahang weaving
The cultural performance was to introduce to foreign representatives on the uniqueness and diversity of arts, culture and ethnics of Malaysia.
The symposium is held biennially to bring together textile art activists from ASEAN and other regions to share information about the uniqueness of their respective textiles.
The symposium organised by the Royal Pahang Weaving Foundation showcased the beauty of Malaysian textiles including songket and batik as well as Malay heritage textile manufacturing techniques such as tekat, tenun, telepuk and gergus for exposure to the world community.
In conjunction with the symposium, 19 papers will be presented by representatives of 13 countries including Brunei, Indonesia, Cambodia, Canada, India, the Philippines and Myanmar, specifically to discuss the preservation of the art and sustainability of native woven textiles in the ASEAN region.
