BEIJING, Oct 21 — China’s Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment Zhai Qing says China is actively participating in global governance to address climate change, with promoting the building of a fair, equitable, cooperative and win-win global climate governance system.
“We will continue South-South cooperation in climate change and contribute Chinese insight, Chinese strength and Chinese input into addressing global climate change,” he said during a press conference at the sidelines of the 20th National Communist Party of China (CPC) Congress here.
At the same time, Zhai said the country is doing its best to help other developing countries especially small island states, African countries and least developed countries (LDCs) to improve their climate response capacity to reduce the adverse impact of climate change.
“China will complete the world’s highest carbon emission intensity reduction and in the shortest time in global history and we will achieve from carbon peak to carbon neutrality, that fully reflects China sense of responsibility as a major nation,” he said.
He said in 2020, China’s carbon emission intensity dropped by 48.4 percent compared from 2005, exceeding the commitments made to the international community. Meanwhile last year, the proportion of coal in China’s total energy consumption fell to 56 percent from 72.4 percent in 2005, he said.
Chinese government’s pledge to see carbon dioxide emissions peak by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
