KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 — Former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will be fielded as PKR’s candidate for the Bandar Tun Razak federal seat in the 15th general election, a party source said.
Malaysiakini today reported an unnamed PKR “central leader” as saying the party made the decision to assuage Bandar Tun Razak’s constituents who saw their last two MPs leave PKR.
Dr Wan Azizah is the incumbent in Pandan. Aside from being a former DPM, she was previously also the Pakatan Harapan chairman and PKR president before making way for her husband, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“PKR has won in Bandar Tun Razak since 2008, but the previous two MPs have ended up going against the party.
“We admit that voter confidence in PKR (at the constituency) is not that stable and therefore we need a heavyweight leader to hold this place,” the source was quoted as saying.
The late Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim won the Bandar Tun Razak seat as PKR member in both the 2008 to 2013 general elections.
He was also appointed as Selangor’s mentri besar in 2008.
However, PKR sacked Khalid Ibrahim in 2014 after he refused to make way for Dr Wan Azizah to replace him as the MB.
In the 2018 general election, PKR once again won the seat with Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar, who quit the party after the Sheraton Move.
