MUAR, Nov 13 — Perikatan Nasional (PN) will continue pushing for the bill to amend the Federal Constitution on citizenship for children born overseas by Malaysian mothers if given the mandate to form the federal government after the 15th general election (GE15).
Perikatan Nasional (PN) secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the agenda, that he proposed himself, has been included into the PN manifesto for GE15.
“I have told everyone this issue, (previously) my hands were tied by existing laws under the constitution, it’s not that I don’t sympathise with the issue, I am sympathetic but I can’t do anything.
“That’s why I asked that PN include it as an agenda in the manifesto,” he said at a media conference after a flood preparation briefing at the Royal Malaysian Police Technical Institute in Bakri here today.
Hamzah, who is also Home Minister, was commenting on the similarity between the Barisan Nasional (BN) manifesto and the PN manifesto that promised citizenship to children born overseas to Malaysian mothers.
“I hope everyone not just BN, but all coalitions will follow what PN had announced earlier.
“This will show that this issue can be resolved earlier if everyone had been with me,” he said.
