MELAKA, Nov 30 — Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has taken steps to build flood barriers at its substations located in flood-prone areas in Melaka Tengah, said its general manager Khairizam Ibrahim.
He said among the substations involved are those in Taman Merdeka and Sungai Putat here, which are often hit by flash floods.
Mitigation works which are in progress at two substations in Alor Gajah are expected to be completed by next year, he added.
“If inundated, damage at each substation is estimated to cost RM50,000.
“To reduce the risk of inundation the floor base at the substation is widened and a wall barrier is constructed to prevent water from entering,” he told reporters here.
He said to ensure public safety especially in the populated areas, frequent inspections would be carried out on electrical installations to facilitate operation in switching off supply in the event of a disaster.
However, he said TNB would ensure electricity supply is stable at all times at the flood relief centres to provide comfort to the evacuees, adding that mobile generators are also on standby at the centres.
