KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 — The number of flood victims in Kelantan, Terengganu and Perak recorded an increase tonight while in Johor, the number remained unchanged.

In KELANTAN, the state Disaster Management Committee secretariat said in a statement that the number of evacuees rose to 5,642 people from 1,679 families tonight, compared with 3,320 people out of 975 families this evening.

Also, 58 relief centres had been opened in eight districts, Kota Bharu, Pasir Mas, Bachok, Tanah Merah, Pasir Puteh, Kuala Krai, Machang and Jeli.

Meanwhile, water levels at seven main rivers were reported to have exceeded their danger levels. The rivers are Sungai Lebir in Kampung Tualang, Kuala Krai at 36.10 metres (m), Sungai Lanas in Air Lanas, Jeli at 29.55 m, Sungai Golok in Kampung Jenob, Tanah Merah (25.00 m), Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas (10.39 m), Sungai Golok in Kuala Jambu, Tumpat (2.56 m), Kampung Jenob, Tanah Merah (25.00 m) and Melor Bridge, Bachok (9.42 m).

In TERENGGANU, the flood situation has worsened as the number of evacuees continued to rise to 3,785 people from 1,068 families compared to 1,866 people from 512 families this afternoon.

A total of 76 relief centres were activated in seven districts, one centre in Kuala Terengganu, Besut (26), Hulu Terengganu (25) Setiu (11), Dungun (six), Kemaman (six) and Marang (one).

In  PERAK, two relief centres were activated, the first at Dewan Sekolah Menengah Abdul Rahman Talib (SMART) Batu 4, Teluk Intan and the second at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sungai Tiang Darat, Selekoh, both housing a combined total of 49 people from 16 families as of 8 pm tonight, an increase from 47 people from 15 families in the evening.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), several areas in Kerian, Larut, Matang, Selama and Kuala Kangsar are expected to experience continuous rain until Dec 20.

Meanwhile, in JOHOR, the number of flood victims in the Segamat district remained unchanged at 72 people from 21 families at three relief centres.

From that total, 34 people are at Balai Raya Kampung Batu Badak, another 27 people are at Balai Raya Kampung Kuala Paya and 14 people at Dewan Komuniti Kampung Tasek.

Based on data provided by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Sungai Muar in Buloh Kasap Segamat has exceeded the warning level at 8.91 metres.
