MELAKA, Jan 6 — The Melaka Road Transport Department (RTD) caught two Bangladeshi nationals and four ethnic Rohingya who were found to be driving without a valid licence at Lebuh AMJ here today.

State RTD director Muhammad Firdaus Shariff, in a statement, said the department also seized one car and four motorcycles in the special operation codenamed ‘Op Pemandu Warga Asing’ (PeWA).

“The five vehicles belong to local citizens with different owners, and another vehicle belonging to a Bangladeshi national who was issued a summons for driving without a licence was not confiscated and was taken home by his friend.

“The impounded vehicles will be inspected for identity verification before being released, and the summonses must be paid first before the vehicle can be claimed by the owner,” he said.

Elaborating, Firdaus said 14 summons notices were also issued in the two-hour operation from 10 am, which involved seven personnel in plainclothes.

“The Melaka RTD views seriously the increase in foreign drivers violating the law. We will take stern action including against vehicle owners who allow foreigners to drive without a licence as stipulated under the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.
