Another 70 members of the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) have been deployed to Turkiye on a 14-day mission to assist search and rescue (SAR) efforts after the deadly earthquake that hit the region on Monday.
Sabah-Sarawak Affairs and Special Tasks Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali told reporters at the send-off of the SAR mission at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Wednesday night that the first batch of the SMART team had arrived at the epicentre of the earthquake and started their rescue mission there.
Meanwhile, Malaysia Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team (STORM) Commander Ismail Abd Ghani said 5 K9 (Dog Detection Unit) members and two tracker dogs, Frankie and Dentie, were among the 30 STORM personnel deployed to Turkiye, to ensure that the SAR operations can be carried out more effectively.
