KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 — IJM Corporation Bhd’s unit IJM Toll Division has pledged full support for the government’s initiative to provide payment options either via debit or credit cards to highway users.
IJM Toll Division chief executive officer Wan Salwani Wan Yusoff said the company, which operates the Lebuhraya Sungai Besi (BESRAYA) and Lebuhraya Baru Pantai (NPE) highways, was fully committed to ensuring the smooth implementation of the open payment system.
“Through this, highway users will be able to use their debit or credit cards, among others, as methods for toll payment,” she said in a statement today.
According to Wan Salwani, concession companies had been engaged in discussions with the Works Ministry, the Malaysian Highway Authority and other relevant parties since early this year on planning for the open payment system.
“Works Minister (Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi) did mention that by September this year, the open payment system will be made available to the public (and) as such we shall be putting efforts in meeting the timeline,” she said.
On March 19, Nanta said in a statement that five highways nationwide would begin implementing an open payment system by September.
They are the Sungai Besi Expressway, New Pantai Expressway, Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway, Guthrie Corridor Expressway and Penang Bridge.
According to Nanta, the open payment system was one of the initial initiatives to be implemented as a transition towards the multi-lane-fast flow (MLFF) system that was being actively worked on.
Through the implementation of MLFF and the open payment system, more opportunities will be made available to other e-wallet providers to participate, ending the Touch ‘N Go monopoly.
