PETALING JAYA, April 12 — Prasarana Malaysia Berhad will implement a new key performance indicator (KPI) system that aims to monitor and ensure better maintenance of Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) systems.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the KPI is called Mean Kilometres Between Failures (MKBF) is an approach that will be used to assess the stability and journey of trains before damage occurs and it has also been implemented in several countries.
He said the KPI, which is open, will be displayed and updated monthly on Prasarana’s website and social media for public information and evaluation starting next month.
“Now we are experiencing an unsatisfactory situation where the MKBF for the Kelana Jaya LRT line is 150,000 (kilometres), which is the rate of damage occurring in the rate of 150,000 kilometres of the train journey… which is an unsatisfactory figure.
“So our MKBF target by the third quarter of 2026 is one million, which means train damage will only occur after one million kilometres of travel,” he said at a press conference after a breaking of fast ceremony with Prasarana staff here today.
Loke said the target will be achieved in stages and is confident that train services will improve following the addition of new coaches in August.
“MKBF also refers to technical disruptions exceeding five minutes… it means that if there is a delay or train disruption of five (minutes) or more, it is counted as a fault and will be evaluated through MKBF,” he said.
He said in addition, reports on the number of passengers, ride factor, escalator and elevator facilities will also be publicly displayed through weekly reports on the same platform.
