KUALA TERENGGANU, May 13 — Malaysia’s encouraging achievement in the 2022 World Press Freedom Index is seen as capable of boosting investors’ confidence in the country,” said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
He said this is because transparent media reporting is one of the benchmarks for foreign investors before they decide to invest more than RM25 billion for the next 10 years in this country.
“Malaysia’s position in the World Press Freedom Index 2022, released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is a very remarkable achievement and the highest in history.
“I am sure this will give additional confidence to investors that the media in Malaysia will carry out its duties as one of the pillars of democracy, reporting without hiding anything, especially in the aspect of (government) governance,” he said.
Fahmi spoke to reporters after attending a town hall session with the staff of Communications and Digital Ministry (KKD) at Auditorium RTM here today.
Fahmi added that the confidence, along with sustainable government policies, would be able to attract more investment in the future.
Malaysia has jumped six places to 113 with 51.55 points compared with the previous year, when it was placed at 119 (60.53 points).
Malaysia also ranked the highest among Asean countries, ahead of Thailand (115), Indonesia (117), Singapore (139), Cambodia (142), Brunei (144), the Philippines (147), Laos (161), Vietnam (174) and Myanmar (176).
