BANGKOK, Aug 14 — Thailand on Monday reported the first monkeypox death, involving a man who was infected with HIV and syphilis, according to senior health official.

Director-general of the Disease Control Department, Dr Tares Krassanairawiwong said the 34-year-old man had been admitted to hospital in Chon Buri province on July 11 and was diagnosed with monkeypox a week later.

He said the man was discharged from hospital after weeks of treatment, but was readmitted to Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute in Nonthaburi province on Aug 9 after suffering breathing difficulties and experiencing fatigue.

“Doctors found that the man had rashes all over his body, as well as lung and brain infections. He also had severe immunodeficiency.

“He received medication at the hospital, but his condition deteriorated. He passed away on Aug 11,” he said.

Dr Tares said there are a total of 189 monkeypox cases reported in Thailand so far, including 28 foreigners. He added that 82 of them were infected with HIV.
