JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 5 — One of the two early voting centres for the Pulai parliamentary by-election, namely the Kempas Police Station, was closed at noon today.

The four-hour voting process started at 8 am, and the last voter arrived at 11.05 am.

Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh arrived at the location at 9.20 am to observe the early voting process.

Also present were Johor police chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat and two of the three candidates competing, namely Zulkifli Jaafar of Perikatan Nasional and independent candidate Samsuddin Mohamad Fauzi.

Another early voting centre at the Marine Police Region 2 Headquarters in Tampoi, opened simultaneously at 8 am, will be closed at 5 pm.

The weather this morning was sunny, but the Malaysian Meteorological Department predicts rain this afternoon in some areas of Johor Bahru district.

Pulai is one of two by-elections called in Johor following the death of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub who was also the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, on July 23, the other being the Simpang Jeram state seat.

However, there is no early voting for Simpang Jeram.

Polling for both seats is on Sept 9.
