KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 — The rapid development of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the creative industry will be further utilised by existing local animation experts, said Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital, Teo Nie Ching.

She said that various programmes, including upskilling and reskilling, have been implemented to provide a skilled workforce for the use of AI in the industry.

“I believe that AI will remain in our society, so it is crucial for us to cultivate a generation skilled in this field to ensure that the current workforce knows how to use or apply AI technology in their careers.

“So I believe that the career of animation experts will not be replaced by AI but rather by those who know how to use AI… that’s why next year, guidelines containing seven principles about the use of AI will be launched,” she said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Negara today.

She stated this in response to a supplementary question from Senator Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai, who wanted to know the government’s steps to protect the local animation industry, especially local animation experts, from being affected by the use of AI.

Meanwhile, Teo said in efforts to increase awareness and capability regarding AI, the National Artificial Intelligence Strategic Roadmap 2021-2025 under the auspices of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) is responsible for guiding AI development and subsequently protecting the rights and privacy of individuals from misuse.

“The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) also collaborates with MOSTI in developing the National AI Governance and Ethics Guidelines, participating as one of the agencies in Task Force 1: Legislation and Ethics established under the National Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence Committee in October 2022.

“These guidelines will be used for the development of responsible and trusted AI among users to address issues conflicting with local values, religions, and socio-cultural aspects,” she said.

She said this in replying to a question from Senator Datuk Seri Prof Dr Awang Sariyan regarding the utilisation of AI and the government’s steps to ensure that local values and culture are not neglected due to the absence of any control mechanisms for AI in terms of religious or socio-cultural values thus far.
