BANGKOK, Jan 14 — Tragedy marred the National Children’s Day celebrations in the southern province of Satun when an emergency bridge collapsed, injuring at least 15 children on Saturday.
The emergency bridge-laying truck had been brought to the Khuan Don sub-district administrative organisation office for entertainment activities for young children as part of the Children’s Day celebration.
At around 11:45 am local time Saturday, a metal sling supporting the bridge unexpectedly snapped, causing the children to fall to the ground. Reports from local media indicated that the operator had raised the bridge vertically, but the suspension slings failed, leading to approximately 35 children plummeting two to three metres to the ground below.
Emergency responders hurried to the scene to provide treatment to the injured. The victims suffered back problems and spinal discomfort.
Authorities have started their investigations to determine the cause of the incident.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expressed concern in the aftermath of the incident involving children’s play equipment in Satun. He urged the organisers to ensure comprehensive medical care for any injured children.
He also emphasised the importance of prioritising the safety of play equipment by conducting thorough inspections before use and regular maintenance.
“Event organisers to prioritise the safety of play equipment by inspecting everything carefully before use and maintaining it regularly,” he said in a statement.
