JAKARTA, Jan 18 – The presidential candidates for the 2024 General Election in Indonesia have declared a firm commitment to combat corruption in the country.
During an event organised by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Wednesday, presidential hopeful Anies Baswedan emphasised the implementation of the Asset Forfeiture Law as one of the methods of battling corruption.
He believes that the use of this law is crucial to impoverish corrupt individuals while serving as a deterrent to others involved in corruption.
Due to the low public trust in institutions, including the KPK, Anies is determined to review the KPK law and restore power while reinstating ethical standards for personnel.
Another presidential candidate, Prabowo Subianto, stressed the importance of human resource development in anti-corruption efforts and expressed continuous support for the prevention and enforcement initiatives of the KPK.
He proposed proportional penalties for individuals who do not transparently provide information in the Wealth Report of State Officials (LHKPN) and emphasised improvements in the quality of life for officials.
Ganjar Pranowo, the third presidential candidate, suggested the digitisation of the financial system, the strengthening of e-budgeting and e-planning systems, and the restoration of the KPK’s freedom to carry out its functions.
He advocated the involvement of the Attorney General and the Police in promoting transparent practices and recommended strengthening the LHKPN through whistleblowing by the public, ensuring confidentiality.
Indonesian citizens will vote on February 14 to choose the next leader to succeed President Joko Widodo, who will conclude his second and final term in October.
