PORT KLANG, Jan 19 – The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has so far not received any negative feedback from the import and export industry regarding the issue of increased shipping costs following the crisis in the Red Sea.

Its minister Anthony Loke said however MOT will continue to monitor the situation and communicate with industry players involved in the sector from time to time to see what kind of mitigation is needed to help them.

“So far we (Ministry of Transport) have not received any negative feedback from export and import industry players. We are still monitoring the situation.

“I think for some of the industry players mentioned in the press, the situation is manageable for the time being. We hope this is just for the short term because the situation is very tense over there, and I think there are efforts from other countries to try to have better security control there,” he said.

Loke said this after the opening ceremony of the country’s first international cruise port, the Costa Serena ship at Port Klang Cruise Terminal (PKTC) on Friday.

On Jan 15, Bernama reported that the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) urged Malaysian shipping companies to prepare for prolonged disruptions in the Red Sea, following a worsening security crisis in the region, forcing shipping companies to divert their ships to safer routes which are longer.
