BEIJING, June 4 – China has started bringing back the world’s first lunar samples from the far side of the moon on Tuesday as part of the Chang’e-6 mission, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).

The ascender part of the Chang’e-6 spacecraft took off from the moon surface to dock on the orbiter part and will eventually bring the samples back to Earth.

The spacecraft was launched on May 3. Its lander-ascender combo reached the moon on June 2.

China got samples from the near side of the moon during the Chang’e-5 mission in 2020.
