PUTRAJAYA, June 7 – Malaysia and Ghana on Thursday discussed bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern, including the upcoming  election of the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth in October, said the Foreign Ministry.

The ministry also known as Wisma Putra in a statement said the discussions took place during a meeting between Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and  Ghana’s  Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey who is on a two-day working visit to Malaysia beginning today.

“Discussions centred on her (Botchwey) candidacy for the upcoming election as the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth in October 2024,” the statement read.

According to Wisma Putra, this is Botchwey’s  first visit to Malaysia since her appointment as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in January 2017.

Ghana was Malaysia’s ninth largest trading partner in Africa in 2023, with total trade amounting to RM2.08 billion and a trade surplus of RM15.45 million in favour of Malaysia, the statement added.

This growing trade trend underscores the potential economic ties and shared interests that enhance the bilateral relations, said the statement.
