PARIS, Aug 4 – Former women’s singles champion Carolina Marin’s return from injury to wrest back the title at the Paris 2024 Olympics, came to a heart-breaking end while at the edge semi-finals victory due to injury, Sunday.

Marin, the Rio 2016 Olympics champion, missed the COVID-19 pandemic-delayed 2020 Tokyo Games in 2021 due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in her left knee, just two years after her right ACL injury in 2019.

In today’s match, the three-time world champion (2014, 2015, 2018) won the first set 21-14, and was leading against China’s He Bing Jiao 10-5 towards straight sets victory at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena.

However, the 31-year-old injured her right leg again while jump smashing.

Marin, who was limping, still tried to continue the match wearing a knee-guard, but withdrew shortly after when the score stood at 10-8, and broke into tears.

Bing Jiao, two-time World Championship bronze medallist, is set to face reigning world champion An Se Young of South Korea, tomorrow.
