BEIJING, Aug 27 – China’s Commerce Ministry on Tuesday expressed strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition against the Canadian government’s action to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), urging Ottawa to immediately correct its erroneous practices.
A commerce ministry spokesperson said Canada’s typical trade protectionism act will disrupt the stability of the global industrial chain and supply chain, seriously undermine the global economic system and economic and trade rules.
“It will impact China-Canada economic and trade relations, harm the interests of enterprises of the two countries, affect the welfare of Canadian consumers, and undermine Canada’s green transformation and global efforts to address climate change,” the spokesperson said.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced at the federal cabinet retreat in Halifax on Monday that the country will raise import taxes on Chinese-made EVs from 6.1 percent to 106.1 percent on October 1.
Tariffs on Chinese-made steel and aluminum products will increase to 25 percent starting October 15.
