TASHKENT, Oct 25 – Election Commission (EC) Chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun and Dewan Negara Deputy President Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed are among six Malaysians who will participate as international observers in Uzbekistan’s parliamentary elections this Sunday (Oct 27).

Other Malaysian delegates are Universiti Malaya’s Vice Chancellor/President Datuk Seri Ir Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman, Malaysian Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) chairman Datuk Prof Dr Mohd Faiz Abdullah, Kuching Member of Parliament who is also Head of Malaysia-Uzbekistan Inter-Parliamentary Group Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen and EC’s Head of Programme (Voter Education) Election Academy Mohd Rizuan Md Drus.

Over 500 international observers and 150 media representatives from 50 countries, including the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), will participate as observers during Uzbekistan’s elections on Sunday. 

The Malaysian delegation arrived here on Thursday (Oct 24). 

On Sunday, about 20 million eligible voters in Uzbekistan will head to the polls to elect 150 deputies to the Legislative Chamber, 56 members of the Senate, and deputies to regional, district, and city councils.

Five political parties have been approved to participate, including the Movement of Entrepreneurs and Businesspeople – Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan (O’zLiDeP), the “Milliy Tiklanish” Democratic Party, the Ecological Party of Uzbekistan, the People’s Democratic Party, and the “Adolat” Social Democratic Party.
