WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 – Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has won North Carolina and is leading in five other crucial battleground states in Tuesday’s election showdown against his Democratic rival Kamala Harris, while his party regained control of the Senate, Yonhap news agency reported.

With vote counting in progress, former President Trump is ahead in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona and Georgia, and won North Carolina as of 12:48 a.m. on Wednesday (EST), according to the Associated Press. The vote tally for Nevada, another swing state, was not available yet.

Trump had secured 230 electoral votes, compared with Harris’ 210 as of 12:48 a.m. To occupy the Oval Office, a candidate must win at least 270 electoral votes out of the total 538 electors representing the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Of the seven swing states, Pennsylvania has been at the center of political attention as it has 19 electoral votes, the highest among the contested states, which could provide a substantial boost for a candidate to cross the 270 electoral college threshold.

The Republican Party has secured at least 51 of the 100 Senate seats, reclaiming control of the upper house of Congress, according to AP.
