Indonesia Urges Probe After UN Peacekeeper Killed in Lebanon

JAKARTA, March 30 – Indonesia condemned an artillery strike that killed one of its peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon and called for a thorough and transparent investigation.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the peacekeeper was killed and three others were injured after indirect artillery fire struck near the Indonesian UNIFIL contingent’s position in Adchit Al Qusayr on March 29.

The incident occurred amid reported hostilities between the Israeli military and armed groups in southern Lebanon, the ministry said in a statement issued in Jakarta on Monday.

“Indonesia strongly condemns the incident and calls for a thorough and transparent investigation,” the ministry said.

The government expressed condolences to the bereaved family and wished a full and swift recovery for the injured personnel.

“We are profoundly saddened by this loss. We pay our highest respect to the fallen peacekeeper for his dedication and service to international peace and security,” it added.

Indonesia is working with UNIFIL to ensure the prompt repatriation of the fallen peacekeeper, while the injured personnel receive the best possible medical treatment.

The ministry stressed that the safety and security of UN peacekeepers must be fully respected at all times in accordance with international law.

“Any harm to peacekeepers is unacceptable and undermines collective efforts to maintain peace and stability,” the ministry said.

Indonesia reiterated its condemnation of Israel’s attacks in southern Lebanon and called on all parties to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The government also urged all parties to cease attacks against civilian populations and infrastructure and to return to dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further escalation and advance peace.

Indonesia remains in close coordination with the United Nations and relevant authorities and will continue to monitor developments closely.

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated since the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, 2026, prompting retaliatory attacks by Tehran on Israel and U.S. military bases in the region.

The conflict has spilled into Lebanon, where Hezbollah has targeted Israeli military positions, triggering Israeli counterstrikes that have reportedly killed more than 1,000 Lebanese civilians and injured thousands.

Clashes along the Israel-Lebanon border have also resulted in casualties among UNIFIL personnel from several countries, underscoring growing risks to peacekeeping operations.
