WASHINGTON, July 16 — More than 100 Democrats in the United States (US) House of Representatives voted in favour of ending billions of dollars in US military aid to Israel in the next fiscal year, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.
Despite failing to pass, the measure drew significantly more support than similar efforts in recent years, in a vote widely seen as symbolic.
A proposed amendment by Republican Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky to eliminate roughly US$3.3 billion in military assistance to Israel failed in the Wednesday evening vote by 314 to 104.
Massie was the only Republican to support the amendment, while broad Republican opposition ensured its defeat.
The proposal was part of House deliberations on funding for the US State Department and national security agencies.
Among the House’s 215 Democrats, 103 voted in favour of the amendment and 10 abstained, meaning nearly half of the caucus backed ending military aid to Israel.
During a similar vote just over two years ago, only 37 Democrats supported reducing the assistance, according to CNN and Politico.
The vote underscored growing divisions within the Democratic Party over US policy towards Israel. While the party leadership continues to support military aid, the progressive wing has increasingly called for ending financial assistance, often citing the war in Gaza.
