SHAH ALAM, July 23 — Piggeries in Kuala Langat are expected to be vacated by October after around 12,000 piglets mature enough to be slaughtered, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim.
“The state government previously ordered that piglets would only be disposed of when they are between seven and eight months old, so we are targeting that by October, all these piglets can be disposed of and the eviction process can be done.
“A Veterinary Services Department (DVS) audit found that only around 12,000 pigs are still at those farms, compared with around 240,000 before evictions began,” he told a press conference after the Selangor Integrated Coastal Management Plan Review Workshop at De Palma Hotel here today.
He also said the cleanliness of areas near the farms have improved thanks to the phasic evictions.

Izham added that the Selangor government is now focusing on restoring the area by conducting land inventory studies and identifying appropriate compensation for the farmers.
He said discussions with the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (MAFS) are being held to obtain federal support for land restoration efforts and to help the ex-farmers transition to other agricultural activities.
“DVS and consultants have been ordered to evaluate the livestock’s health and land cleanliness throughout this process … Some those who have been (running these farms) have done so for three generations and are losing their income and such. The state must help them so they may continue to earn a livelihood.
“Earlier, like I said at the (state assembly sitting), farmers’ welfare is the responsibility of the state government,” Izham asserted.
Previously, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state would execute Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj’s decree to abolish local pig farms.
Amirudin said the Selangor administration would consider farmers’ welfare as they are also Selangoreans, and help them transition to other sources of income. – MediaSelangor
