KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21– The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested five individuals including a government agency chairman with the title Datuk on suspicion of abusing power in the disposal of land owned by a government agency under a ministry in Penang, involving a loss of approximately RM1.96 million.
According to sources, four other individuals consisting of two company directors, a technical manager and a female clerk are believed to be involved in the case.
“The chairman of a government agency in his 50s was arrested for allegedly abusing his position at the time as deputy chairman and board member to approve the sale of eight lots of land in South Seberang Perai in 2015 to a company suspected of belonging to his associates.
“The individual involved is also believed to have used his position by being involved in approving the sale of the land at a price lower than the market price, involving a loss of approximately RM1.96 million,” he said.
According to sources, all the suspects, aged between 40 and 50, were arrested in stages from about 11 am to 12 pm at the Penang MACC office yesterday and will be brought for a remand application at the George Town Magistrate’s Court this morning.
Meanwhile, MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman when contacted confirmed the arrests and informed that the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
