TOKYO, Sept 14 — Fujitsu Ltd. said Monday that it will begin global sales in November of “Monaka”, a Japan-made central processing unit that functions as the brain of artificial intelligence systems, Kyodo News reported.
The telecommunications and computer maker also said it will sell domestically made servers for the Japanese and European markets, while the United States and China are intensifying efforts to lock in related technologies as the military use of AI expands.
Demand is growing in Europe for reliable, Japanese-made products from a security perspective, prompting Fujitsu to provide integrated offerings ranging from semiconductors to servers.
Current AI chips are primarily graphics processing units, or GPUs, with U.S. semiconductor giant Nvidia Corp. dominating the market.
But GPUs have the drawback of requiring massive amounts of data and electricity. Fujitsu says Monaka can run AI with less data and power by using a method known as inference.
