SHANGHAI, Sept 28 – Malaysia concluded its campaign at the 48th WorldSkills Competition (WSC) Shanghai 2026 on a proud note, securing one bronze medal and 13 Medal for Excellence across various technical and vocational skill categories.
Undergraduate student Sia Xin Wan, 21, who clinched the bronze medal in the Software Testing category, also received the Best of Nation medal for Malaysia at the Shanghai World Expo Cultural Centre on Sunday night.
The Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) student expressed overwhelming pride and gratitude for his historic achievement on the world stage, dedicating the victory to his family, mentors, institution and country.
“Very proud, very happy, and very grateful to have won this medal for Malaysia. Thank you to my family, all my friends, to the people I love, then to my experts and coaches, my school, my country, and to everyone who helped me on this journey,” he said when met by Bernama after the closing ceremony here, tonight.
In addition to the bronze medal, Malaysia’s strong performance was further reinforced by 13 competitors who earned the prestigious Medal for Excellence for achieving high international benchmark standards in their respective disciplines.
Among the recipients was Electrical Installations competitor Muhammad Haziq Lailla Zamri, 22, from Batu Pahat, Johor, who expressed immense satisfaction after placing eighth out of 36 global competitors.
Digital Construction representative Muhamad Nashrul Zulkifli, 22, from Ayer Hitam, Johor, described bringing home a Medal for Excellence as a deeply humbling experience when competing shoulder-to-shoulder with top global talents.
Bakery competitor Herman Wong Xiu Hong, 20, from Miri, Sarawak; and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning competitor Muhammad Amir Fitri Mohd Sefulrizam, 21, from Kuala Nerang, Kedah, both voiced immense pride in raising the nation’s profile on the global stage.
Meanwhile, Electronics competitor Amirul Sharif Sharifudin, 22, from Selangor, expressed satisfaction with his overall output during the four-day competition, stating his ambition to further his studies and work as an electronics engineer.
The remaining Medal for Excellence recipients were Angellin Ai Pian (Beauty Therapy), Grace Ong Yi Mei (Cooking), Wan Nur Amilya Wan Zolkarnaini (Hairdressing), Muhammad Huzairy Mohamad Thes (Mechanical Engineering CAD), Muhammad Ammar Azli (Welding), Lam Kar Chun (3D Digital Game Arts), Nadratulliyana Ab Malek (Fashion Technology), and Wan Hamiz Ozai Wan Hamidzi (Rail Vehicle Technology).
WSC Shanghai 2026 saw the Malaysian contingent represented by 22 participants competing in 21 skill segments covering various technical sectors under the supervision of the Department of Skills Development and the Works Ministry.
The tournament, from September 22 to 27, brought together 1,400 of the best skilled young professionals from more than 65 countries and regions representing 64 skill areas.
