RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct 3 — The United States on Friday temporarily suspended consular services in Brazil over security concerns, two days before the country’s presidential election, reported German news agency dpa.
US citizens were urged not to visit diplomatic facilities, even in emergencies, and to seek assistance remotely instead, the US embassy in Brazil said.
The embassy did not say how long the suspension would remain in place or provide a specific reason for the move.
A US government source cited by Brazilian broadcaster TV Globo referred to a possible bomb threat. It remained unclear whether the alleged threat was directed at the US embassy or another location in the capital Brasília.
The Australian embassy in Brasília was also closed on Friday over security concerns. Australia referred to the US security alert and advised its citizens to avoid the US embassy, consulates and surrounding areas.
Brazilian police stepped up security around the US embassy but said there were so far no concrete indications of a threat, according to news portal G1.
Brazil is due to hold its presidential election on Sunday.
Ahead of the vote, Brazilian intelligence agency Abin warned of a risk of US interference and growing pressure on Brazil, according to state news agency Agência Brasil.
The latest polls show left-wing incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, running neck and neck, well ahead of the other candidates. A run-off is considered likely.
