KUCHING, Oct 27 — Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) election machinery in the state constituencies of Mambong, Tarat and Serembu which form the Puncak Borneo parliamentary constituency will support whoever is the coalition’s candidate for the seat in the 15th General Election.
Mambong assemblyman Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said GPS chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will lead in finalising the candidate and the machinery from the three constituencies have agreed to ensure GPS victory in the Bidayuh-dominated parliamentary constituency.
“We leave it to the (Sarawak) Premier (Abang Johari) to decide (who is the candidate) and as far as we know, each constituency is working towards winning for GPS,” he told reporters when met after the launching of the airasia Ride here, today.
He said this when asked on whether he would give full support to Puncak Borneo incumbent, Datuk Willie Mongin should he be named as the GPS candidate to contest the constituency, which he won under a PKR ticket in the 2018 election.
Willie, who is the Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities II, won Puncak Borneo in GE14 by a 4,005-vote majority before joining Bersatu after the Sheraton Move in 2020 which saw the Pakatan Harapan government toppled and was later accepted into Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), the lynchpin of GPS, last August.
In the 12th State Election held last December, GPS, which also comprises Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), took all the three state constituencies.
In that election, Willie had shown his support by campaigning for all the GPS candidates contesting in the three constituencies.
