Thailand Holds Durian Festival to Promote Agricultural Products to Enter China

CHUMPHON, Thailand, June 21 (Xinhua) — A durian festival celebration was held on Wednesday in Thailand’s southern Chumphon province, aiming to showcase the quality of Thai durian and promote more high-quality agricultural products to enter the Chinese market.

During the event, including a durian harvesting, durian, mangosteen and other agricultural product exhibitions, Governor of Chumphon province Thienchai Chukittiwiboon cut a durian with a knife at Chumphon’s durian orchard, marking the start of the 2025 Chumphon durian harvest season.

As the largest durian planting area in southern Thailand, the natural conditions in Chumphon are suitable for the growth of tropical fruits. Local farmers have rich experience in durian planting and have adopted advanced technology, making Chumphon durian famous for its excellent taste and high quality, Suban Rakthong, Chumphon Provincial Agriculture Chief, said.

He added that there would be over 300,000 tons of durian production in the province in 2025, with fruit season lasting from May to December, bringing in more than 30 billion baht (919.8 million U.S. dollars).

Thienchai said that the government departments and fruit farmers worked together to ensure the quality of durian by adhering to the guidance of agricultural practices certification and standardizing the planting process.

“Chumphon is also an important region for the export and distribution of durian in Thailand, and China imports the most durian from Thailand. We hope the popularity of Thai durian in China will be further enhanced through this event, so that more Chinese consumers can know Thai agricultural products,” said Thienchai.

Chinese Consul General in Songkhla Wang Zhijian said China is willing to further strengthen trade cooperation with Thailand and expand the import of high-quality Thai agricultural products, with the upgrading of Chinese consumption.

He hoped that both sides would work together to ensure the quality control of durian, so that more Thai durian with good quality would become a table delicacy for the Chinese. And it will add luster to the practical cooperation between the two countries by promoting high-quality agricultural products such as southern Thailand’s durian and mangosteen.
